Magical Matters!

During Term 3 we discovered what scientists do when they explore new ideas. We hypothesized and tested our ideas about how to change things through heating, cooling and mixing. Here is the movie we made of our experiments. It was shown at our first Myross Bush Media Awards night. We won the award for the biggest explosion- keep an eye out for it!

Safety Signs

During our 'Safety Matters' inquiry, we investigated some things that are designed to keep us safe, like signs, safety caps and visi vests. After hunting around the school for some things we thought were unsafe, we took action! We made some signs to help warn people to be careful. Some children chose to use kidpix, others chose to paint thier sign. Here we are with our warning signs around the school. Can you see the bright shapes and colours, the warning words and the simple images?

First Aid

We have been learning about keeping safe. The St Johns lady came to Room 2 and told us about going to hospital in an ambulance. We had to practice calling 111. We found out only some children know how to say thier addressess and phone numbers. Our goal is for everybody to know this by next Friday. Practice at home!

Five Little Monkeys!

Room 2 has started a new inquiry about safety. We have been learning what safe and unsafe means. When we did the poem 'Five Little Monkeys" we discovered the monkeys were being unsafe! We pretended the cheeky monkeys came to Room 2 and did unsafe things. We wrote stories about them and told them what might happen if they ran inside, or stood up on chairs! Here we are sharing our poem and stories in assembly. It was our first assembly performance!

Huhu grubs!

We have been talking about what a good learner looks like in Room 2. We are discovering that a good learner is curious about the world and asks questions. Mrs Polaschek bought something for us to be curious about- some huhu grubs!

We all had a good look and a feel. Some children held them- they were squishy and wiggly!

Here are some of our thoughts and wonderings about the huhu grubs.

"I think they are slimy" said Ava.
"The huhu grub is lumpy" said Logan.
"I think they are yucky" said Lachlan.
"I see a slimy grub" said Angus.
" I think they are slimy and I think they icky and yucky" said Nick.
"I wonder if the head is on the right side and it poops out the left?" said Eilish.
"I wonder which side is which?" said Lily
"The huhu grub pooed. Yuck!" said Cody.

We found out huhu's are native to New Zealand (just like us!) and they turn into big beetles that only live for two weeks. They live in rotten logs.

Cross Country 2011

What a great day we had in the sunshine! The children have been practicing hard and it showed in the fantastic effort they all put into their run. Well done everyone! Congratulations to Cody, who won his race, William, who was second, and Eilish, was third in her race.

Our Mihi's

We have been learning about who we are. What makes us unique as New Zealanders? In New Zealand we have different ways of saying hello. We learned to say our mihis. We had to say hello, our names, our whanau name and our parents name. Check us out!

To Town!

We read a book "To Town". The children very creativly made some ways to get to town out of boxes. Then we videoed each other talking about our creations. We had to learn how to hold the camera steady, and to keep the person we were filming in the frame! Check out our clever thinking!

Swimming

Swimming has been an exciting time for Room 2 students. We have all learned something new, with some children becoming confident at putting their heads in the water, to some students working on their backstroke. We hope everyone finds opportunities to go to the pool and keep building on their great new skills!

Peg Chasey

Here we are playing peg chasey. First we practiced asking for help to get the pegs on our backs. Then we had to 'steal' pegs off someone elses, while trying to protect our own back! It was tricky, but a lot of fun!

It was so exciting to have Room 2 start this week. We welcome William, Nick, Logan and Ava from Room 1, and Angus, Lachlan, Lily and Cody who turned 5 this week. We have had fun exploring Room 2, and we love our new colourful mat, bought for us by Friends of the School.
"I like Room 2" said Angus.
"Greedy Cat is cool" said Nick.
"I got to be king of the kiwi cushion" said Logan.
"I like the greedy cat book" said Cody.
"We love our new classroom" said William.
"I like the interactive whiteboard" said Lily.
"I like the mat" said Ava.
"I like the number line you can jump on" said Lachie.
